Just a Carton of Eggs

Fun and good times at the supermarket: Out of eggs, I’m in line at Grocery Outlet with a carton of fresh brown “cage-free” eggs. In front of me are several hispanic laborers who are also purchasing just a few items. I see cookies in front of the divider and ask them, “are those good”? They grin at me: “good with coffee”. I ask the person behind me to hold my place in line and walk to the aisle that I’m directed to, to pick up a pack of the cookies. Wow, only two bucks! A bargain to be sampled in the morning. Thanks! The cashier who I have not seen before in the the short time that I have been visiting here in Portland, is a bit on the slow side – which perhaps may be because he is engaging in extended conversations with his customers. He asks one of the hispanic laborers what his name is and is told “German” in a thick accent. He responds “mine is Jeremy”, to which I retort: and I’m originally from Germany. What do you know: Three Germans! He looks at me for a bit and then asks, “really”? Then, before I can answer him he tells me “Ich bin unsichtbar” in a ridiculous American accent that is barely understandable. I start laughing, as what he has said is “I’m invisible”. I look at him and ask him “invisible, huh? I bet that comes in real handy when hiding from the boss”. He looks back at me and says” oh you understood what I said? “Barely”, I grin. He hands a receipt to the laborers and asks me what the word for that is. “Quittung”, I tell him although in hindsight it is probably “Kassenbon”. Oh, that’s interesting he replies, slowly counting out my change. “Can we do the language lessons some other time”? a lady two people behind me grumbles, as I have to laugh again, and depart with my eggs.

Egg wreaths?

Egg wreaths

Eggs, eggs, and more eggs:

As I entered one of my local Peet’s coffee stores last week, I couldn’t help but notice the barista who was making my café au lait, sporting bright neon red hair. Glancing over at her, as she was tending to her coffee activities, I remarked to the cashier I was ordering from, that it seems that someone didn’t find an egg, which cracked up the cashier (pardon the pun), who relayed my observation and comment to the barista girl. from whom I then sheepishly picked up my coffee drink. She was smiling and laughing though, I’m happy to say.

My next surprise came at the local AAA office, where, while I was making a payment, waiting at the counter for a new employee to coax the proper information out of their computer, I generously helped myself to two large chocolate eggs that were in a bowl on the counter. Computer sluggishness does have its benefits.

Running an errand in the city, I passed by a flower store that actually had the egg wreaths you see pictured above, prominently displayed on their wall. Now Christmas wreaths I can understand, but this just seems a bit silly to me. What’s next, baseball wreaths?

Have an eggstraordinary week

Easter Monday

Eggs

Eggs

In Germany, Easter Monday  is also a holiday — alas not here. I do hope, that the crocus have prevailed in their fight against the snow by now, as purple, orange, white, and lavender exclamation points to Spring. This morning it rained very heavy for a while, and then, just in time for Easter, it stopped. as the sun pieced the white fluffy clouds and lit up the magnolia blossoms. People brought flowers from their garden to decorate the cross. Christ has risen! The pastor and his wife made lemonade and lemon tarts, respectively — by means of a generous donation from an old lemon tree in their back yard.

The pastor’s wife also told me, that when she was young and living in the Midwest, it always rained at noon on Good Friday. She said, that her mother told her, that God was crying for his son.

It was also my god-daughter’s birthday today, as well as my cat Calvin’s — making it easy to remember. Since Easter is not complete without colored eggs for me, I dyed some last night. Guess which one is his…

On a side note, as I sat in my back yard with a cup of coffee, a hummingbird came within just a few feet of me, and started chirping at me, leaving me dumbfounded. My son Patrick later told me on the phone, that my dad had instructed the hummingbird from heaven, to wish me a happy birthday.

Have a blessed week,

In Jesus name,

Matthias Leue
