Quiet Sunday

20140525-111131-40291749.jpgSuch a contrast: last Sunday, I was still driving on a freeway in California to attend Service, surrounded by speeders going who knows where in their silly hurry. A bit jet lagged, having arrived a few days ago in Germany, I am slowly acclimating. It’s great to see my brothers after two long years. This morning, as yellow smiling buttercups greeted me, I made my way to one of the small villages in Haunetal to my favorite little church. Just a few cars on the road, otherwise, wonderful peace everywhere. The ringing of the church bells could be heard in the distance, as I entered the small village with its half-timbered houses. An idyllic Sunday morning. Some large red unfolded poppies caught my eye — a sure sign of summer, and a few people from the village walking to church. I closed my eyes in the bright sun, soaking in the early morning and happy to go to Service. Thank you God for this beautiful day.

Closed for the Day

California Golden Poppy

California Golden Poppy

I went out to photograph a bit with my friend Gary the other day in the East Bay hills, before the heat wave came and went. The grass is now rather tall, and starting to change into its summer color. The wind swept over the hills, as the grass swayed gently under its touch. The wild mustard — in bright yellow — a lovely contrast against the green and slightly gold rolling hills. The California oaks are all dressed up now too. Blue and purple colored delicate small lupines here and there, peeking through the lofty grass. Sometimes I think the overcast days are even better for photographing, as the colors are a bit more subdued and the light is more even. The poppies in the higher elevations tend to be much smaller in stature and blossom size, as they struggle for nourishment in the sparse soil. Most of the them were closed for the day — a few reluctantly opening a bit, trying to coax out the sun — which makes our poppies smile.

Have a blessed week

Mother’s Day

Thank you mom (Omi) for teaching me how to cook. You would be proud of what I have passed on to my sons, and what terrific culinary experts both have become by now. I know you are watching from heaven. Oh — and all the oleanders and wild roses are blooming everywhere today for you under the California sunshine.

Three Sparrows

As the sun was smiling from the east this morning, I looked out the shower window, as I like to do, to see all the potted plants below. Three sparrows were taking turns flying back and forth from their various perching places: the princess flower, the oak tree, and one of the maple trees — in order to take a morning bath in the bird bath. Abundant joy at waking to the day, feathers glistening with clear sparkling water drops. Now that they are finished, it’s time for God to feed them.

It reminded me of the gospel hymn: “His eye is on the sparrow”.

Have a blessed week
